Manchester City struggling in form and outside the top four, aim to end a seven-game winless run when they host Nottingham Forest at the Etihad.
A defiant Pep Guardiola raised six fingers to the Liverpool crowd in response to the "sacked in the morning" chants echoing from Anfield, a reminder of the many times he has triumphed in English football. However, the number six is also significant for Manchester City, who have now suffered six defeats in their last seven matches after a 2-0 loss to Liverpool. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah sealed the win for Jurgen Klopp's side, leaving City 11 points behind the league leaders.
With this latest setback, City have fallen outside the top four, and their hopes of a fifth consecutive Premier League title now look increasingly distant. Historically, no team with a six-point lead after 13 games has failed to win the title.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest ended their own losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town. Though not a vintage performance, an early second-half penalty from Chris Wood was enough to secure the three points. Wood, who now has 24 Premier League goals for Forest, is just one shy of Bryan Roy's club record and only three behind Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.
Forest, currently in sixth place and just a point behind City, have the joint third-best away record in the league this season, with 11 points from six away matches. Despite this strong form, Forest have not defeated City since the 2008-09 FA Cup, with City winning three of their last four encounters, including back-to-back 2-0 victories in the 2023-24 Premier League season.
