Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will meet again in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, with Real Madrid leading 2-1 after a thrilling first leg.

Real Madrid has historically dominated this fixture, winning the 2014 and 2016 finals and the 2017 semi-finals. However, Atletico Madrid has reason for optimism, having lost just once in their last seven home games against their rivals. In cup competitions, Atletico are unbeaten in the last five meetings, winning four, and need another victory to stay in the tie after last week's loss.

Atletico has overturned a first-leg deficit in three of six previous Champions League knockout ties, all at home. Their impressive home form in Europe, unbeaten in 28 years in the knockout stages, makes them a tough challenge for the defending champions. However, Atletico suffered a late loss to Getafe, a blow to their morale and league position, sitting third in La Liga.

Real Madrid knows they must perform well in the hostile atmosphere of the Metropolitano. Although their record in the stadium is poor, with only three wins in 17 attempts since Atletico moved to the Metropolitano, they remain the favorites due to their pedigree in the competition. Their win last week marked their 500th Champions League game and a record 300 victories.  

Despite their strong knockout record, Real were unimpressive in their 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, where they were outshot and outplayed, raising concerns for Ancelotti’s side ahead of the return leg.
